The Power of Community Care

The Power of Community Care

Community care doesn’t get nearly the same spotlight as self-care, but it’s just as vital.

If self-care is tending to yourself so you can function, community care is about showing up for each other so we all can.

And it doesn’t always look dramatic. It often looks small, ordinary, almost invisible.

It looks like:

  • A friend dropping off food when you’re sick.
  • Someone texting to check in because they know you’ve had a rough week.
  • A parent watching your child so you can nap.
  • A neighbour offering a lift when you’re stuck.
  • A colleague picking up the slack because they can see you’re struggling.

None of these moments will make it into glossy self-care guides. But they matter deeply. They remind us: you’re not alone. Someone sees you.

For me, motherhood has been the biggest teacher in this. Self-care mattered more than ever, but I quickly learned that no ritual, no bath, no cream, no meditation could make up for the absence of support. The days when family stepped in or when someone listened without judgement. Those were the moments that helped me breathe again.

But here’s the thing: community care isn’t about giving until you’re empty. It’s not about pouring from a cup that’s already dry. True community care is about contributing in ways that are sustainable for you. It’s about knowing that even the smallest gestures, sending a text, making a cup of tea, sharing a laugh can build connection over time.

And it works both ways. A healthy community is one where care is shared, where responsibility is spread, and no one person has to carry everything alone.

In a world where loneliness is everywhere, this kind of care isn’t optional. It’s essential. Community care is what keeps us connected and connection is just as vital to our wellbeing as sleep, hydration, or food.

So if you’re feeling burnt out and disconnected, it might not be because you’re failing at self-care. It might be because what you really need is community care.
